Two new countries have joined the 2026 Oscars race, adding fresh energy to Africa’s growing presence in the Best International Feature Film category.
Madagascar makes its first-ever submission with “Disco Afrika: A Malagasy Story” by Luck Razanajaona. Distributed by Claire Diao’s Sudu Connexion, the film caps years of steady growth in Madagascar’s screen ecosystem, including new festivals, stronger festival showings, and a wave of directors defining a distinct Malagasy cinema.
Meanwhile, Uganda returns with “Kimote” by Hassan Mageye, its second Oscar entry after “Tembele” (2022). The film was praised by the Uganda Academy Selection Committee for its cultural and technical strength.
Together, these selections deepen Africa’s participation in the 2026 Oscar race for Best International Feature Film, alongside entries from Senegal, South Africa, Tunisia, Morocco, and Egypt.
