Founded in 2024 by Tambay Obenson (Akoroko), Jennifer Ochieng (Sinema Focus), and Ikeade Oriade (What Kept Me Up), AFP brings together three independent screen journalism platforms with more regional partners to follow.

On August 22, we hosted our first public-facing gathering in Nairobi at Unseen. The evening featured Rungano Nyoni’s “On Becoming a Guinea Fowl” and conversations about where AFP is headed.
That night we also announced the AFP Critics Prize, which will rotate across African festivals, giving African critics’ voices a central place in shaping film culture. The first edition will be awarded in Lagos this December at the Surreal16 (S16) Film Festival founded by C.J. “Fiery” Obasi, Abba T. Makama, and Michael Omonua.
This short video captures a glimpse of that August 22 evening in Nairobi.
