Trailer Debut: Kahlil Joseph’s “BLKNWS: Terms & Conditions”

Premiering in the Perspectives section of the 75th Berlinale in 2025, it’s set aboard a futuristic ship called the Nautica on its way to Ghana during a fictional Transatlantic Biennale.

The film takes inspiration from W.E.B. Du Bois’s unfinished “Encyclopedia Africana,” a global reference work he began in 1909 to document the history and culture of people of African descent.

Using that idea as a model, the film unfolds like a moving encyclopedia: archival footage, fictional scenes, and contemporary commentary are presented as different “entries” that connect slavery, colonial trade, and modern politics to present-day debates over culture and power.
