2025 César Nominations: African Stories, Talent, and a Look at Past Wins

The Césars are France’s national film awards, often compared to the American Academy Awards (Oscars), recognizing achievements in French cinema. Among the nominees this year are two feature films that center African stories and talent.

  • “Ernest Cole, Lost and Found,” directed by Raoul Peck: Haitian filmmaker Raoul Peck secured a nomination for “Ernest Cole, Lost and Found” in the Best Documentary Feature Film category.
  • “Souleymane’s Story,” starring Abou Sangaré: Directed by Boris Lojkine, it earned eight nominations, including Best Picture, Best Directing, and Best Cinematography. Abou Sangaré, the film’s lead actor who is of Guinean descent, earned a Best Male Newcomer nomination for his performance. He previously won Best Actor at Cannes in the Un Certain Regard section.
