Distribution Spotlight: MILISUTHANDO Lands UK Theatrical Release—An Introspective Exploration of Identity in Post-Apartheid South Africa (New Trailer)

“Milisuthando,” from South African writer-director Milisuthando Bongela, a film featured in my ongoing “Distribution Spotlight” series, is now set for release in select UK theaters starting October 18, 2024, as part of T A P E Collective’s SNAPSHOT initiative.

The “Distribution Spotlight” series focuses on African films that have premiered at major international festivals since 2022 but continue to face distribution challenges.

These titles are tracked on a regularly updated Akoroko list (currently at 60 films) that puts a spotlight on the ongoing challenges African films face in reaching global audiences, despite critical acclaim and festival recognition.

Founded in 2015 by Angela Moneke and Isra Al Kassi, T A P E Collective emerged as a response to the lack of representation on UK screens.

Through initiatives like SNAPSHOT, the organization continues to work towards platforming under-served films, with a particular emphasis on works by and about women of color.

“Milisuthando” made its world premiere in the World Cinema Documentary Competition section at the 2023 Sundance Film Festival.
