African Films at Berlinale’s 2025 EFM: Who’s In, Who’s Missing, and Why

The European Film Market (EFM) is one of the key global film and TV markets. Held alongside the Berlinale, it’s a major hub for film sales, financing, and distribution deals from around the world.

Subsequently, the EFM 2025 program offers a snapshot of where African films stand in the global market—and the hurdles they continue to face.

Less than 20 African films (titles with significant African co-production participation or entirely African productions) were presented at EFM 2025 among 450+ total market screenings—an indication of both progress and barriers that persist for African cinema in global distribution.

EFM operates on strict business and industry-driven criteria, making access far more challenging for independently produced African films without international (primarily European) backing.

Earlier this month, Akoroko Premium subscribers received an email newsletter with an in-depth analysis of African films at the 2025 EFM, looking at their presence, regional distribution, and barriers to entry.

It breaks down the structural challenges African films face in the global market, the role of international partnerships, sales representation, and festival backing in securing EFM screenings.
