#UK #Nigeria: Disney+ has released a trailer and set a March 29, 2024 premiere for the documentary MADU, which tells the story of Anthony Madu, a Nigerian ballet dancer who gained fame from a viral video.
Directed by Matt Ogens and Kachi Benson, the film follows Madu’s journey from Lagos to the prestigious Elmhurst Ballet School in the UK, exploring themes of discovery, growth, belonging, and acceptance.
The 13-year-old ballerino drew international attention after a video of him dancing in the rain went viral in 2020, shared by actress Viola Davis. This led to a scholarship at the Elmhurst Ballet School.
Despite initial challenges adjusting to a new environment, Anthony eventually settled into his new life, embracing the rigorous ballet training and academic opportunities offered at Elmhurst.
The documentary aims to highlight Madu’s efforts to introduce ballet to Nigeria and inspire others.
It’s worth noting that, while Disney+ is available in six African countries, South Africa is the only Sub-Saharan African country of the six. This Nigerian story will regrettably not be seen by Nigerians in Nigeria – at least not on March 29, 2024.
