Mati Diop, director of the Cannes Film Festival-winning film “Atlantics” (2019), has helmed a short film titled “Tokyo Trip” for Chanel’s 2022/23 Métiers d’art collection. The film features Mama Sané, who previously starred in Diop’s debut feature.
“Tokyo Trip” captures Diop’s personal interpretation of the collection as Sané embarks on an exploration of the Japanese capital, encountering enigmatic situations along the way. The film serves as a visual journey that blends fashion, artistry, and the allure of Tokyo’s ambiance.
Diop’s debut feature, “Atlantics,” was selected to compete for the Palme d’Or at the 2019 Cannes Film Festival, making the filmmaker the first Black woman to direct a film featured in competition at the festival. It won the Grand Prix at Cannes, the second-most prestigious prize after the Palme d’Or.
“The”Toky Trip” is an undertaking that was part of Chanel’s cultural initiatives to celebrate Senegalese creativity and craftsmanship in connection with its Métiers d’art collection — an annual fashion collection.
