I’ve been reflecting on the obsession with “firsts.” It’s a concept embedded in global culture. “The first person to do this,” “the first organization to achieve that,” etc. Now imagine how many African “firsts” still lie ahead for African film and television, both at local and international levels, especially with global interest at seemingly unprecedented levels, and expected to increase.
And yet, what will these “firsts” truly signify?
Last month, Akoroko Premium subscribers received a newsletter that examines the growing presence of “firsts” in the African film context, and their significance as indicators of progress, while critiquing their potential to oversimplify history.
The piece ultimately challenges readers to celebrate these accomplishments thoughtfully, recognizing them as part of a broader, ongoing narrative of African filmmaking.
